A new play about an American Jewish family torn apart over Israel is on stage now in the Berkshires. The Zionists: A Family Storm, by playwright S. Asher Gelman (Afterglow) and directed by Chloe Treat, follows a prominent Jewish family that gathers for a long-awaited reunion at a luxury Caribbean resort. As a hurricane closes in on the island, a fiercer storm builds inside, and old wounds, clashing values and bitter disagreements about Israel in the aftermath of Oct. 7 come pouring out.

Produced in association with Miami New Drama, where it premiered in April, the play asks whether family bonds can hold when fundamental beliefs collide. Gelman has said he wants audiences to leave ready for the uncomfortable conversations many families have been avoiding.

Performances run through July 3 at Barrington Stage Company’s Boyd-Quinson Stage in Pittsfield, Mass., with shows at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
