Jewish Family Services of Northeastern New York will hold its “Generations Celebration” on Thursday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Ohav Shalom Synagogue in Albany. (Image courtesy of JFS)
Jewish Family Services of Northeastern NY (JFS) will celebrate two decades of senior support programs and honor community leaders at its upcoming Generations Celebration on Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Ohav Shalom Synagogue, 113 Krumkill Rd., Albany. The evening from 6 to 9 p.m. will feature cocktails, live music, awards, and a dinner catered by 518 Kosher supervised by the Vaad Hakashruth of the Capital District.
The event is held in the memory of longtime JFS executive director Anschel O. Weiss and includes the presentation of the Anschel Weiss Community Builders Award. Established to recognize individuals who serve humanity with humility, this year’s awards will be presented to Rabbi Dr. Moshe E. Bomzer, LCSW, former New York State Senator Neil D. Breslin, and Gordon N. Zuckerman. The evening will also recognize the leadership of the Massry family noting the family’s investment in the new JFS counseling center and its commitment to securing the agency’s future.
“These three community leaders fully embrace the spirit of the Anschel Weiss Community Builders Award. They came together, used their keen knowledge and awareness of community needs, and laid the groundwork for the JFS Center for Counseling and Resilience. With their leadership and the vision of the Massry family, individuals of all ages, faiths, and backgrounds now have access to compassionate mental health care at an accessible site and also virtually,” said Jane Ginsburg, JFS president and CEO.
“We believe that the strength of a community is measured by how it cares for those in need,” the Massry family said in a statement. “Jewish Family Services has been a source of hope and compassion for so many, and we are proud to support its mission and the lives it touches every day.”

According to JFS organizers, the honorees reflect a shared record of public service across the region:
Senator Neil D. Breslin: A lifelong Albany resident who represented the Capital Region in the New York State Senate from 1997 to 2024, Breslin has been recognized for his legislative leadership, advocacy for working families, and civic engagement. “As a senator, when we wanted to do something at the local level or to pass legislation, I could always rely on JFS to do the right thing,” Breslin noted.

Gordon N. Zuckerman, president of wholesale brokerage firm Murray and Zuckerman, Inc., Zuckerman has served on regional educational, healthcare, and interfaith boards. In 1996, his advocacy helped shape New York State insurance law to allow charities to hold insurable interest in donor life insurance policies. “Having worked with Anschel in the early 2000s, I witnessed the great work he did advancing JFS in the community,” Zuckerman shared.

Rabbi Dr. Moshe E. Bomzer, rabbi emeritus of Albany’s Congregation Beth Abraham-Jacob (CBAJ), rav hamachshir of the Vaad HaKashruth, and longtime hospital and correctional chaplain, Bomzer has spent decades guiding regional communal and mental health initiatives, including at JFS. “I am humbled to be selected to receive this award named after my longtime friend and colleague Anschel Weiss,” said the rabbi.

In addition to the major awards, the celebration marks the 20th anniversary of two JFS programs:
JFS Project 5 Transportation: A volunteer-driven lifeline that delivered over 2,400 rides last year alone. JFS will spotlight its longest-serving volunteer drivers: Abe Lacheta, Margo Strosberg, and Sandi Zarch.
Albany NNORC (Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community): Providing care management, social programming, and wellness services to help roughly 4,500 older adults age safely in place within their neighborhood around St. Peter’s Hospital.
Those interested in being on the honorary committee or in sponsorship are asked to make arrangements to do so by October 5 to ensure inclusion on the printed invitation. General event tickets will go on sale in October. All proceeds support JFS’s free and subsidized community services.
