Discussion of Czech film set by SJCA for May 13

A Holocaust film discussion panel will explore how a Czech couple faced dangerous choices hiding a concentration camp escapee during Nazi occupation.

Divided We Fall,

SARATOGA SPRINGS–Saratoga Jewish Community Arts (SJCA), with a grant from the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York and sponsored by Temple Sinai of Saratoga Springs, will  present a panel discussion on Zoom of the Czech film Divided We Fall,” on Tuesday, May 13, at 7 p.m.

Directed by Jan Hrebejk, the 2000  film is based on a true story that took place in a German-occupied Czech village during World War II. A childless couple find themselves making dangerous choices as they hide a neighbor’s son, who has escaped from a concentration camp,

David, the quiet, tortured Jew who is shy, unassuming and supposed to be dead is hidden in their pantry for two years.

“The filmmaker,” says Phyllis Wang, coordinator of SJCA, “explores not only the banality of evil as articulated by Hannah Arendt, but also the banality of goodness and the irrationality as well as the tragedy of their collision.”
