ONEONTA–Temple Beth El of Oneonta will present in concert the nationally recognized klezmer ensemble, Big Galut(e), as part of the congregation’s 90th anniversary celebration.

Capping off a weekend of events, the ensemble will perform Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary, 83 Chestnut St. following remarks by Mayor Dan Butterman. Temple Beth El was founded in 1936. Their first home was over the Oneonta Theater on Chestnut Street. The sanctuary has have been at its present location since 1956 and is fortunate to have an acoustically warm sanctuary that is perfect for musical performances, according to concert organizers.

Klezmer refers to the joyous and soulful folk music of the Eastern European Jewish communities dating from the Middle Ages. Since its creation in 2010, Big Galut(e) has blended history, passion, virtuosity and humor into its performances. Founding member Robin Seletsky is a second-generation klezmer musician who has been  recognized by the New York Times for her “stylish” and “jazzy” clarinet playing. Big Galut(e)’s instrumentation of clarinet, violin, accordion, bass and guitar is typical of traditional klezmer.Programs typically include dance melodies, reflective improvisations and sing-alongs.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for students and free admission will be offered for children under 12. The building at 83 Chestnut Street in Oneonta is handicapped accessible. Information may be obtained at 607-222-5687.
