Cantor SHIRA GINSBURG
Ne’imah, the Capital District’s Jewish Community Chorus will present its first major post- Covid concert on Sunday, May 31, at 4 p.m. at the Agudat Achim Synagogue, 2117 Union St., Schenectady. The concert titled “Shira” will spotlight Cantor Shira Ginsburg as guest performer.
The chorus showcases a variety of Jewish choral music and specializes in Hebrew and Yiddish songs. Neimah performed for decades under the direction of Anna Dubrova and is now directed by Benjamin Gruder of New Jersey. This year’s concert is dedicated in Dubrova’s memory.
Ginsburg, a Troy native, is cantor emerita of the East End Temple in Manhattan, where she served as senior cantor for 18 years She is an actress, singer and playwright. She tours the country performing her one woman musical, “Bubby’s Kitchen” based on her grandmother’s life.
Ginsburg grew up in Troy on her family’s dairy farm. She has been a guest lecturer at the Hebrew Union College, Moishe House and the Florida Atlanta University She coaches and mentors cantorial students at the Hebrew Union.
Gruder also serves as the artistic director and conductor of Kol Rinah: the Jewish Chorale of Westchester; Nashir!, the Rottenberg chorale in Manhattan and with Uptown Sound, a vocal jazz ensemble. Ticket information may be obtained at 518-458-2517, sherrykearns33@yahoo.com.
